today's other readings are 2 Kings 22: 8-13 and 23: 1-13 and Psalm 119

The image of a wolf in sheep's clothing is an image that is both incongruous and very disturbing - not just because the two are so different, but that deception is implied, with evil intentions wrapped in innocence.

False prophets were a concern both of Jesus, and later, St. Paul.  For such false prophets were those who used our faith to deceive and manipulate others for their own agendas and purposes.  But our faith is not one of deception and deceit, but one of goodness, compassion, mercy and love.

Sadly, there have been countless examples of faith leaders, in all the religions of the world, who have used their positions of leadership for their own purposes. In doing so, they became false prophets.  They may have started with good intentions, but the lure of power and fame and adulation made them succumb.

One cure for this is, as more than a few priests and bishops have said, to remember who is in charge - God - and whose church it is - God's - and anyone who has a position of leadership must remember they are accountable to God for the flock they have been entrusted with.
