Today the universal church celebrates the feast of undoubtedly the most famous of Jesus' disciples, Mary Magdalane, whose encounter with the risen Lord, depicted above, is also the basis of today's gospel reading.
It is agreed that Mary is named after the area she was from, Magdala, which is on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, just north of the modern city of Tiberias.
