today's other readings are Jeremiah 26: 1-9 and Psalm 69
We have a gospel today that is often used for funerals, In it, Jesus comes to Bethany, where Lazarus has just died. His sister, Martha, begins by confronting Him with a question of confrontation, which paraphrased would be, "Do You thing You are late?" But quickly her anger subsides and she then tells Jesus that she knows He can do anything that the Father desires. Which, of course, leads to Lazarus' returning back to life.
But quickly the tables turn. Jesus then confronts Martha after teaching her that He is the resurrection and the life, "Do you believe this?" Which leads to her yes.
That question of Jesus is also asked of each one of us when we have to face the reality of a death of a loved one. Amidst the incredible sadness, sorrow and grief that envelopes us, we still have the hope of our faith, that this precious life has not ended but has changed, that this life can lead to eternal life.
This is our hope. This is our faith. And to that we say, "Yes".
