today's other readings are Gal. 3: 1-5 and Luke 1

"Ask, and it will be given you (but probably not now nor in 15 minutes); search, and you will find (but you have to do the searching); knock, the door will be opened for you (I can't hear your knocking).

When it comes to prayer, I get the feeling at times we think of God as a drive-up ATM or a drive-up fast-food restaurant.  We show up, at our convenience and desire, place our prayer request and then "drive away", fully expecting that our "order" will be filled.

Jesus' words today remind us of the need for persistence of prayer.  But something else is needed, our willingness to pray and be willing to act on these prayer requests.  For the very same Holy Spirit that prompted you to pray will also provide you with the grace to persevere and act.
