today's other readings are Esther 14 and Psalm 138

A good friend is one who is willing to listen and gently ask questions of a situation you are facing and then simply says, "I'm here for you. I am willing to work with you on this", rather than "Here's your answer".

Now you could say that simply providing the answer would make life a lot easier - which is true, but just for that occasion.  But what about you growing in your ability to discern and discover.  Someone who walks with you through the process of coming to a decision is helping to provide you with skills for the future.

Which brings me to a basic point of the gospel today.  God is like that friend who walks along with us, willing to teach us and guide us through the Holy Spirit.  God is not just the Divine ATM spitting out what we ask for in our prayer requests.  No.  Rather, God is the one who walks with us and helps us to find our way to know what we truly need - which can often be quite different than what we want.

God is very patient with us.  In our relationship with God, we need to have the trust and patience to work with God.  After all, it's all about God will being done, and not always our will be done.
