today's other readings are Acts 20: 28-38 and Psalm 63
Who or what do you belong to?
In my case, I belong to a family that I grew up in. I have belonged to school communities when I was younger. I was part of a number of sports teams. I have belonged to a number of parishes throughout my life, and for the past 11 years, I have belonged to this parish community. I belong to a world-wide community of people called the Roman Catholic Church. I belong to the priesthood. But most of all, I belong to God.
In today's gospel Jesus, in His prayer, reminds us that His followers do not belong to the world. That statement makes me cringe a bit. Because I can think of how in many ways in my past life I have belonged to the world, a world of distorted priorities and values. But no, I have to stay away from those aspects of this world. Because, in the end, I belong to God.
