today's other readings are Sirach 42: 15-25 and Psalm 33

Not being able to participate - something that we may all have experienced in our lives.  Maybe it was because we didn't belong or had the gifts or talents. Maybe it was because we were ignored or overlooked.  In any case, looking on, from the outside, can be a very lonely, sad experience.

Bartimaeus was definitely on the sidelines of life.  It wasn't a matter of being ignored or unwanted, but a physical reality - he could not see, When he hears that the famous Jesus is near, what does he do? He does not remain silent. Instead he cries out "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me." ( prayerful cry that forms the basis of the famous Jesus Prayer: "Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner".

Jesus hears him and called him. The same people who had told him to be quiet now help him to go Jesus. In his excitement and confidence, Bartimaeus left behind his most valuable possession-- his cloak/security blanket, and his begging spot along the road.

Aware of this, Jesus asks him what may be the most important question Jesus asks each one of us - "What do you want me to do for you?" Bartimaeus' response, which is seemingly straightforward and obvious, shows he is aware of his deepest need, which then opens him up to receiving the healing grace he so badly needs. This request is also one of faith, for it shows that he believes that Jesus truly is the One who can change everything.

Jesus is passing by you today. Will you pray for what you truly need? For our good God always hears the cry of the poor, the blind, the brokenhearted, the sinner.
