today's other readings are Romans 13: 8-10 and Lk. 14: 25-33
Today's Psalm 112 is known as an alphabetic psalm. Alphabetic psalms are so named because the first letter of the word that begins a line or a couplet or even a strophe follows the succession of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet (FYI, the longest psalm in the Book of Psalms, #119, is also an alphabetic psalm).
Psalm 112 lauds the virtues of a God-fearing person, someone who shows His faith in God in all aspects of their life. Our response to this day illustrates one of those virtues - "happy the merciful who give to those in need". For the person of faith is grateful to share his/her treasures with their brothers and sisters in need, the Church, and other charities.
A question we can all ponder today - am I one of those happy merciful who give to those in need?
