When people go to Rome, a mandatory part of the visit includes St. Peter's Basilica, and rightly so.
But how many do not bother to visit the St. John Lateran Basilica, the dedication of which is celebrated by the universal church today. Why do we mark this dedication? For the Basilica has a wonderful Latin title: Omnium ecclesiarum Urbis et Orbis mater et caput" (The Mother and Head of all Churches of the City and of the World). For this is the cathedral church of the Holy Father, and not St. Peter's - and this is where his cathedra (seat) is located.
