today's other readings are Psalm 89 and Mk. 4: 1-20

David is thankful - he knows that God has blessed him in his role as King of Israel.  God has helped him in the taking of Jerusalem and now Israel is at peace.  But there is a problem.  There is no proper place for the ark of the covenant to rest.  David wants to fix that.

But God has different ideas.  And in the message David will receive from God via the prophet Nathan, God will remind him that He is in charge.  God reminds him of all that He has done for David.  And He tells him that while you want to build Me a house, no, I will build you a house.  But this house is not going be a structural house but a dynasty, which will reach its fulfillment in the person of a son, who of course is Jesus Christ.  Which is one of the reasons that Jesus would often be referred to as the Son of David.

In many ways, that dynasty continues.  And while countless structural houses that we call churches have been built for God and His people, the true dynasty that lasts forever is His Church.
