today's other readings are Jonah 3: 1-10 and Psalm 51

In today’s gospel, Jesus reminds the crowds that He is Himself is the sign they seek, and unless they repent of their evil ways, they will be subject to judgment.

Jesus states that He is greater than Jonah, greater than Solomon, and calls on the people to repent, a call to which the people of Nineveh responded, and which the Queen of Sheba travelled so far so as to benefit from the wisdom of Solomon.

This call to repentance, a feature of the season of Lent, is a crucial part of the gospel message, and also applies to our own generation. We must repent of our sinfulness and evil ways, like Nineveh, and in turn listen to the wisdom of the gospel message, like Sheba listened to Solomon, if we hope to dwell in God’s eternal kingdom.

We do not need any further signs or proof of God’s redemptive plan. Jesus' message and His saving Passion, death and resurrection are enough.
